We are excited to announce that in the summer issue of PleinAir Magazine our group was featured in an article entitled "Paint it Forward".  The editor, Stephen Doherty, spent the day with us discussing the plein air painting process, interviewing our artists and the Art Dept Chairman, as well as photographing/videoing our painting event at the University. We were delighted to have him. This edition is on the newsstands now. Check it out!

Adirondack Park Plein Air Invitational

June 2011

In June, David Heath participated in a special week long invitational event organized by Plein Air Magazine publisher, Eric Rhoads,  at Adirondack Park in New York.  Eighty-one professional plein air painters created at least two field studies each per day. It was a huge success and everyone had a fantastic time.

Peaks of Otter Music and Art Festival

Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia

As part of our educational outreach program, members of the Blue Ridge Plein Air Painters helped park rangers organize a Paint-Out open to the public along Abbott Lake at the Peaks of Otter Lodge. Artists from as far as 200 miles away traveled to join us for the weekend of painting. Our goal for the future is to extend the festival along the length of the parkway through adjoining states. Anyone interested in next year's event may contact us via our Links page.

Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest

Plein Air Paint Out
Forest, VA

April 29, 2012

On April 29, 4 of the Blue Ridge Plein Air Painters participated in the Paint out at Poplar Forest with 28 other true plein air artists.  Enthusiastically they braved 46 degree weather and afternoon rain.  It doesn't have to be sunny to find drama to paint!

Their paintings were all juried into the Exhibition in Lynchburg on display June 1-30

Art in the Mountains

Blue Ridge Parkway, Virginia

Sept. 8th, 2012

Rodney Laughon spent a productive morning quickly capturing the west end of Otter Lake (milepost 63) during the parkway's annual Art in the Mountains paint out. In addition, he heroically saved another artist's umbrella/tripod when it blew into the lake.

The following weekend at the Kaleidoscope Art Festival in Lynchburg, Va this painting was selected by the juror for special recognition.  Congratulations Rodney!!

Demo Day

The Little Gallery
Smith Mountain Lake, VA
May 18, 2013

In conjunction with our gallery exhibit, The Little Gallery at Smith Mountain Lake
asked us to participate in a demo in front of the gallery on Saturday, May 18, 2013.

All afternoon we painted from life, photos and field studies to give patrons an
idea of how a field study, painted en plein air, is used to create a studio painting.

Visitors were able to watch 5 different approaches to the process of
developing a painting, while at the same time asking questions of the artists.

The day was great fun and we have been invited to return.
The owners told us it was one of the most well liked
demonstrations in the history of their gallery!

Plein Air Invitational Adirondacks Park

June 2013

At the invitation of Plein Air Magazine, David Heath joined over 100
plein air painters for a week of intensive painting in late June 2013.
Two of his many field studies from that week are shown below.

Charley worked from a photo to show the process of laying in bold paint strokes, and capturing the essence of the landscape while also enhancing its color.
David spent the afternoon teaching the art of developing the best possible composition from his reference, while also discussing supplies and technique.
Based on a field study, Kathy created the second layer of her preferred studio painting process over a base of dry oil paint composed of complimentary and analogous colors.
Lois created a large ethereal painting of glowing clouds from a small sketch she had done on location weeks before.
